1. Public Speaking: Public Speaking is a speech style used to address and communicate ideas or pass down information to an audience effectively. This highlight is one of the major soft skills to possess, it not only helps with making new social connections but also aids career advancement, boosts your confidence, and improves your strategic IQ.
2. Negotiation: Negotiation to me, is a compromise between two or more involved parties. It is a valuable skill that draws consensus and places a common ground for everyone’s benefit. This skill can come handy in the market, at the workplace, with your teammates, in fact, ‘asking for a raise’ is a form of negotiation. Rather than let opportunities slip through your fingers, secure this skill and own the bargaining table.
3. Listening Skills: Rather than be a passive listener, be an active listener. Do not listen for the sole purpose of responding, listen to understand the ‘why, what, who, where, when, whose, which, whom, and how’. That way, you can easily receive and interpret messages. Additionally, it increases your ability to retain information.
4. Writing skills: I bet you’re wondering why writing is one of the major communication skills. Why not? A good write-up is as well a mode of communication just as public speaking is one to a large audience. In such mordern Information Age as we are in, writing is a crucial skill to possess , a misinterpretation of what is written can be a genesis to misinformation. Additionally, most formal jobs expect that you communicate through emails, memos, reports or formal letters. While writing, have the foreknowledge that an effective writeup is transparent, accurate, appropriate, and understandable to the reader.
5. Marketing: There were times I wished telepathy was not a mere figment of our imagination but was real. I had tried to escape the truth and importance of verbal communication because although a necessity, it was one thing I sucked at. Confronting reality, I had to grow by facing my fears. I run a business and marketing is that one thing you cannot do without. Surprisingly, you don’t need to be a marketer before you see marketing as a valuable skill. Marketing is how you tell your story to appeal and attract your client. This requires you having a level of communication in customer service. Sometimes it doesn’t even have to be in business, it could be how you strategize and market yourself for opportunities.
